The Indiana Foreign Language Teachers Association is an all-volunteer organization formed in 1969 to serve teachers of world languages in the state of Indiana.
The Indiana Foreign Language Teachers Association (IFLTA) is disheartened to hear of districts across the state cutting language programs for the upcoming school year. The loss of Dual Language Immersion Programs, K-8 programs, and 3rd and 4th year high school programs will set Indiana at a significant disadvantage in comparison to the other states around us. Language education is vital to our state's economy as well as our national security and it is not a skill that can be mastered in 2 years of high school courses. In a recent study done by the Association of International Education and Research "91% of companies surveyed suggested language education is of 'great ' or 'some' importance." They also found that 1 in 3 companies across the US report that they struggle to find employees with the necessary international competencies. Indiana boasts over 1100 international companies, covering most of our counties, both large and small. Graduating students with no language skills and limited cultural competencies will mean that our students will be at a competitive disadvantage in comparison with tgraduates from our neighboring states. While IFLTA understands the current financial situation that schools are facing across the state, we urge districts to not only think about the short term, but the long term, and keep promoting language programs as they are critical skills that our students need.
